The 22 Hebrew Letters
Living elemental forces · Each letter is an operator, a gate, a quantum of creation
In plain words: an operator is a force that does something to whatever it touches; a gate is the doorway made when two letters meet; a quantum is a smallest unit — these twenty-two are the smallest pieces the whole system is built from.
One subject, four resolutions
In this system a Hebrew letter is not a symbol you look up — it is an operator. Each carries an element, a force, a role, a planet or sign, and a tarot trump, and it acts on whatever it meets. That is why the system can generate meaning rather than merely store it.
The Sefer Yetzirah (the “Book of Formation”, the ancient text this whole system grows from) divides the twenty-two into three classes: 3 Mothers (Aleph, Mem, Shin — the elemental axes), 7 Doubles (each with a hard and soft sound — the planets), and 12 Simples (the zodiac). Take any two of the twenty-two and you have a gate: 22 choose 2 = 231 (that is simply the number of different pairs you can make from twenty-two things). Every letter therefore opens onto 21 others.
And because the Tree of Life joins its ten sefirot (its ten spheres — the stages creation passes through) with exactly twenty-two paths, each letter is one of those paths — a named passage between two specific states. Select any letter below and its path lights up on the Tree, with the reason it runs where it runs.

The twenty-two letters are this system’s alphabet in the literal sense — the smallest units everything else is spelled out of. This page is the reference for all twenty-two, and the anchor the other letter-pages hang off: the Tree (where each letter is a path), the 231 Gates (where each pair is a combination), and the shapes those combinations make.
What it computes
- 01Each letter carries six fixed attributes from the Sefer Yetzirah tradition: an element, a force, a role, a class, an astrological assignment and a tarot trump.
- 02The class comes from that text’s own division — 3 Mothers (elemental axes), 7 Doubles (planetary, dual-polarity), 12 Simples (zodiacal, single-direction). 3 + 7 + 12 = 22.
- 03Each letter’s numeric value follows the standard Hebrew system: 1–10, then 20–100 by tens, then 200, 300, 400.
- 04The Tree path comes from the letter’s path number (11–32) and the two sefirot it links. The explanation beside it is then derived from those sefirot’s pillars and functions plus the letter’s own element and class — not written per letter.
- 05Pairing a letter with each of the other twenty-one gives its 21 gates; across all twenty-two letters that makes 231 pairs in all (each pair counted once — Aleph with Bet is the same gate as Bet with Aleph).
How to read it
Read a letter as a verb, not a noun — it is something that acts on whatever it meets. Its element tells you the manner of the action, its class tells you whether it can reverse, and its path tells you which two states it moves between.
What it does not claim
The letter-to-path assignment follows one tradition among several. The Golden Dawn, the Gra recension of the Sefer Yetzirah, and the Ari’s arrangement do not all agree on which letter takes which path, and the tarot correspondences differ likewise. This site states one arrangement and applies it consistently — it does not claim that arrangement is the only correct one, and every reading built on it inherits that choice. The tarot key in particular has two living traditions one slot apart: the Golden Dawn key (Aleph = The Fool, the one this site uses) and the Continental / Lévi key (Aleph = The Magician, with The Fool moved to the end under Shin). Both are coherent; the author's ruling of 21 August 2026 is to keep the Golden Dawn as default and show the Lévi key as a named lens — see the Canon page.
Pick a letter
Filter by class, then tap a tile. Tiles are coloured by element — Fire, Water, Air, Earth — and the small tag under each name is its class.
3 Mothers — primordial elements — Three of the 22 letters — Aleph, Mem and Shin — that stand for Air, Water and Fire. They are the most fundamental of the letters, the three from which the rest follow.
7 Doubles — planetary gates — Seven letters that each carry two opposite meanings — life and death, peace and war, wealth and poverty — and each governs one of the seven classical planets and one day of the week.
12 Simples — zodiac forces — Twelve letters, one for each sign of the zodiac and each month of the year. They are called simple because each carries a single meaning rather than a pair of opposites.

One letter, everything the system knows about it
Its element is Air — thought, speech — the part that carries signal. It is one of the 3 Mothers — the elements themselves.
The letter, in full
The silent breath before speech — pure potential, the number-letter of unity and the divine spark. Aleph carries no sound of its own; it is the aspiration that makes all other sounds possible. In the SGTE system it is the first Mother, representing Air and the principle of Expansion — the initiator that begins every cycle without yet taking a form.A gate is what happens when two letters meet. Tap any letter here to jump to it — a line under these letters then names the two forces that met in the gate you came through. Every pairing is written out in full on the 231 Gates page.
Hover or tap a door to read the pairing before you go through it.
▸ all 231 gatesIts path on the Tree
Ten sefirot, twenty-two paths, twenty-two letters. Each letter is one of the paths — so a letter is not a free-floating symbol, it is a named passage between two specific states.
Aleph is path 11, running from Kether (Crown — pure being) to Chokmah (Wisdom — expansion). It crosses from the pillar of balance (where the two outer forces are reconciled) to the pillar of expansion (force offered outward, unmeasured), so the passage is a genuine change of mode, not just a change of degree.
As one of the three Mothers, it is an elemental axis: it does not merely connect these two sefirot, it supplies the ground the connection stands in. Its element is Air — a passage taken by thought: it carries signal between the two without altering either.
